How to Lose Weight in Thyroid?

0
0

What is Thyroid

Thyroid is a butterfly shaped gland located in the neck below the larynx. It’s job is to make thyroid hormones. These hormones are secreted in the whole body through blood. The Thyroid hormone helps the body to stay warm, use the energy and keep all the organs working. This hormone is called Thyroxin or T4. The T4 name comes from the fact that this hormone contains 4 Iodine molecules in its structure. Thyroid hormones manage the way how our tissues utilize the energy. Thyroid maintains the temperature of body, blood pressure, heart rate and the body metabolism, which is the rate at which food is converted into energy.

What is Hypothyroidism?

When your Thyroid gland is under active, that means you have Hypothyroidism. It is a disease related to thyroid in which the thyroid gland does not make enough thyroid hormone which is required for the usual working of all the organs. As a result, the organs function’s slow down and hence the problems that patients face. Patients suffering from Hypothyroidism have symptoms such as fatigue, dry skin & issues with memory. It can be diagnosed by taking a blood sample for TSH or thyroid-stimulating hormone. If one is diagnosed with Hypothyroidism, then it is treated by taking thyroxin pills everyday for lifetime. With one pill taken daily, the patient with Hypothyroidism can work as any other normal individual.

Symptoms of Hypothyroidism

  • Weight gain – or difficulty in losing weight or excess body fat
  • Feeling exhausted
  • Constipation
  • Forgetfulness
  • Intolerance of cold temperatures
  • Low body temperature
  • low blood pressure
  • muscle pains

You may also feel

  • Mood Swings
  • Dry or grey hair
  • Swollen hands or feet
  • Disturbed sleep
  • Loss of interest in sex

Reason for Increase in Weight

Thyroid hormone regulates the metabolism. Metabolic rate is the rate at which our body burns the calories. It is a major factor in deciding how quickly we can burn calories and hence lose weight. So when the metabolism rate is slow, it becomes difficult to burn calories and lose weight. Not only in weight management, but thyroid also plays a crucial role in maintaining body temperature, appetite and emotions. People feel cold when it’s not that cold for others. When your partner fights with you for AC temperature regularly, it might be because of thyroid levels. Without treatment, these problems will not be solved be it weight or body temperature.

How to Lose Weight in Hypothyroidism

First things first. In order to lose weight, you need to start taking medication. Otherwise you might gain weight plus you also might feel difficulty in doing routine works. Even with medications, losing weight can be difficult. Thus people with Hypothyroidism find it difficult to lose weight even with medications. Thus exercising and keeping a check of your diet is very important. Initially you may feel doing exercise to be difficult as you feel fatigued, but slowly as you lose weight, you have more energy reserves and better distribution of energy creating a positive momentum towards weight loss.

Treatments

If you have hypothyroidism, your doctor will prescribe thyroid hormone tablets. Available in the Market as Brand names: – Tablets Eltroxin / Thyronorm & available in different strengths i.e. (25/50/75/150 mcg) depending on what dosages is required. With a regular 3 monthly checking of your TSH Levels, if you stop taking the medicine, the problem might come back along with the weight.

Are You Listening to Your Patients?

0
0

We all know that communication is really important. But do we actually care for it? Do you as healthcare providers care about listening to your patients?  The Wall Street Journal of last year highlighted an alarming fact. It said that the nurses and technicians were afraid to speak up about anything that they saw was going wrong. This is because they don’t want to annoy or disturb the physician who could be their job provider or an influencer to the business owner. Although Clinics and hospitals are doing a lot to improve communications but it seems like there is still a long way to go.

Stephen Covey in his book “The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People” gives importance to understanding people before  expecting others to understand you. But very few actually listen to people according to him. it is a talent that needs to be developed among people. Especially in healthcare, where providers deal with the health of people, it becomes extremely important.

It is because of two reasons,

  1. Listening is extremely important because then only the doctor can treat the patient well. Without it, provider’s efforts might not produce satisfactory results.
  2. It is important for patient’s psychological satisfaction that he has been heard otherwise the patient might not like the overall experience of the treatment even if she gets cured.

From personal relationships, to getting the first job, making notes in classroom, figuring out which train goes to your destination or to cure your patients, listening is a skill of high significance. Listening is more than just hearing. It is an active process that involves receiving, understanding, evaluating, remembering, and responding.

I have seen or been caught up in many instances where listening and understanding first helped resolve a lot of complicated problems. Although I don’t claim to have succeeded always in solving the problem, but yes listening helps. I am sure you would have been part of several such instances where listening would have helped. It will be very useful to you in problem solving at your site.

When people fail to manage, technology comes to the rescue. There are Patient relationship management software like DocMate that completely automate the doctor patient relationship and thus you can concentrate on the tasks that you like.

Do you prefer Juices over Fruits?

0
0

Do you begin your day with a glass full of canned juice? Do you prefer Juices over Fruits? You might not be helping yourself gain good health or lose weight.

Fruit juice which is considered very good for your health might not be as effective as fruits. Let me take some liberty here. Canned fruit juices might even be bad for your health. Surprised???

Juices are a good source of energy. A good option for those who cannot take solid food like for elderly, ill people or children.

But juices available everywhere are not good for your health. Well read the below mentioned reasons and you might get a little upset because of the damage you have been doing to your body.

Fruits Vs juices – Which is better?

  • When you extract juices from fruits, you in a way subtract fibers and nutrients from your intake. That is hygienic for sure but then you take away a lot from what you could have, had you opted for fruits.

  • When it comes to packaged or processed fruits, the companies add sugars to make it tasty. They also add preservatives to increase their shelf life. Because of the added preservatives and sugar, it might be as bad as aerated drinks. You can read the labels of the canned juices for more details regarding the calories intake, sugar and preservatives.

  • The colorful and eye catchy juice you buy from the local vendor might be infectious, contaminated and bad for your health. Look at the way they wash their glasses. The liquid sugar they add could also be prepared with unhealthy and unclean water. So be sure before you drink it.

So double think before you chose fruit juice over fruits because now you know fruit juices = fruits minus fiber minus some vitamins plus preservatives. Whenever there is an option to choose from between fruits & fruit juices, always choose fruits. If you are actually health conscious, choose fruits over juices.

Why Should You Quit Sugar?

0
0

Here is a shocker to start with. Every person takes 22 teaspoons of sugar, more than three times as suggested by the American Heart Association. Has sugar been an irresistible part of your diet?

Have you been a sweets fan from childhood days?

Then this article is for you and I sincerely hope that the information I am going to share will make some difference in your life, especially your diet, sugar in particular.

Here are the 5 reasons why you should quit sugar.

Sugar Makes You Fat

A diet which has high levels of sugar or includes fructose in particular makes you over eat. Above this, sugar forces your pancreas to secrete high levels of insulin. As a result, other hormones which balance out weight, stress, digestion & metabolism are neglected by the body. Hence you gain weight & become fat. Plus when these hormones are unbalanced, body experiences fatigue and you need more energy leading to you eating even more.

So you can see, there’s more to sugar than just calories getting packed onto you.Quit Sugar | DocMate

Sugar Deactivate Your Immune System

let’s take a look at some of the hidden dangers of eating too many sweets. Consuming too much of sweets deactivates the T-cells from blood that fights bacterial infections. This can last for a couple of hours to an entire day. If you get sick during the cold season, this could well be because you are consuming more sugar than you should.

Sugar Slows You Down

When you lower sugar levels in your lunch, you don’t feel the post-lunch coma. While your colleagues become sluggish, yawn & feel sleepy, you will continue feeling fresh & energetic. As a result, you can do more work in the second half of the day & remain alert.Quit Sugar

Sugar slows Mental Activity

When your sugar levels are balanced throughout the day, you feel energetic & don’t feel sleepy as a result. Not only your feel fresh throughout the day but your memory improves. So you are able to remember things and have an improved focus.

Primary Cause of Diabetes

Eating too much sugar over long times can develop insulin resistance. Would you like to prick your finger with a small needle to test your sugar levels daily? Would you like to inject insulin injections into your stomach? Well if this does not look a comfortable scenario, you better quit sugar or at least lower the sugar levels in your diet.

Just try to quit sugar completely for a week & you will be able to notice the difference it does to your body. You will feel energetic & fresh. I am sure you will like to continue with quitting sugar after you witness the benefits after one week.

Role of Social Media in Healthcare

0
0

The Best place to market your service is the place where your customer is and where is your customer, most probably on Social media!

Social media in Healthcare is crucial. Just to understand, Facebook has 1.7 billion monthly active users. Out of which 1.13 billion people log in to Facebook every day. To have a 1.13 billion active users for a world population of 7.4 billion, Facebook has come a long way. The first thing around 50% of the monthly active Facebook users do on their bed after waking up is that they log in to their Facebook profile to see updates, likes on their photos, status etc. There are similar astonishing figures for Twitter and Google Plus. Twitter has approximately 300 million monthly active users. Most of these users (more than 70%) use Twitter on their mobile phones. So wherever they are, they are active on these social channels the whole day.

If these were not enough reasons for you to be on the social media, let me tell you if you already don’t know, social media is absolutely free. So anybody can create a profile and publish as many posts as many times. There are several other compelling reasons how social media in healthcare is crucial.

Increase Awareness

You can use social media to increase awareness about your hospital. You can publish educational posts related to your specialty. Any good post has the potential to go viral. One viral post could do so much than you can ever imagine. You can record a surgery and post it on your Facebook page. You would like to show how you do it differently as compared to others. You could also highlight how getting a surgery from your hospital is less painful as compared to other places. The crux is that you can differentiate yourself from others and make a brand for you and that too totally free. Thus Social media in healthcare could do much more than you think.

Find New Patients

With a huge number of people using social platforms, there is enormous potential for you to find new patients. People use social media to check your presence, patient testimonials, treatment technologies and reviews & ratings. Several surveys have uncovered the hidden potential of social media. Around 25% of the patients use social media to decide the hospital of their choice. Social Media also drives more traffic to your website. If you as a healthcare provider use a patient relationship management system like DocMate, you also offer some exclusive features like online appointment features, traffic updates and online bill payments helping you retain patients along with helping you acquire new patients.

Collect Feedback

You can have reviews and feedback coming your way through platforms like Facebook, Twitter and Google plus. You can use these to make improvements in the overall service. But negative reviews can do more damage to your service than you can imagine. You can not delete them. But you should be prompt enough to ask for reasons of the bad review, apologize, try to answer the query and you might see a changed rating by the same person. There are patient relationship management systems like DocMate which allow you to verify reviews before they are pushed online. This helps you have only genuine reviews listed on your website and social media pages.

Best Return on Investments

Social media is free. You can post unlimited posts through your profiles and people who follow you or who like your page will get to see your posts. The more interesting your posts, the more engagement you create. Not only posts, but the advertisements on these are most cost-effective. On one hand, you would pay a minimum of $1 to $2 for a cost per click campaign in Google Adwords, on Facebook; you could get a cost per click at as low as $0.1. Thus if you have still not explored the social media, you would be lagging behind.

Your Competition is Social, so should You

If your competitor is on social media, you have to be there. But if the competitor is still inactive, it is, even more, the reason to be on the social media channels. People on these social media channels are receptive to your posts. Even your advertisements are read and have a greater impact on your target audience.

Hope this article helped you understand the importance of social media in Healthcare. You could also read a related article by clicking here.

Impact of Internet on Youth

0
0

Around 51% of the world population has an internet connection today. In 1995, it was less than 1%. From 1999 to 2013, the number of users has increased ten times. The first billion was reached in 2005. The second billion in 2010. The third billion in 2014.

Yes, the internet gives all the information within nanoseconds. You can have any information you want, with just a click of a button. You can access and share any kind of data, image, infographic or content with anyone and anytime. To cut it short, the Internet is being bombarded with data continuously.

Did you know, in every 60 seconds on the Internet

200 million Emails are sent
44 million messages are sent on WhatsApp
6 million Facebook posts are seen
3 million search queries are posted on Google
700,000 GB of data is transferred.
200,000 people log in to Facebook
47,000 Apps are downloaded
400 hours of videos are uploaded
6 new Wikipedia articles are published.

Let’s have a look at the Country wise Internet Users. The below chart shows that China, India & USA occupy the top 3 ranks when it comes to the highest number of internet users.

country-wise-internet-users

But does the internet actually help? What are we doing with the saved time! What are we learning and how is it impacting children and teenagers. Let’s have a look.

Addiction

Impact of Internet on youth

Teenagers are in love with the internet. With telecom players offering cheap data plans, parents have become lenient on allowing their children to use the internet.

This has lead to students, young adults and children spending hours on WhatsApp, Facebook, and other social media platforms. There are addicting games which children can play the whole day and still not get bored.

When somebody spends too much time on the internet, it disrupts his mental growth and he becomes addicted to it. Just like any other addiction, it becomes all the more difficult to stay away from internet.

It is such a widespread problem that there are internet de-addiction centers in countries like USA, China, Taiwan & Korea.

Low Patience

Impact of Internet

Ups and Downs are a part & parcel of life. There are times when everything works for you. But there are times when nothing goes right. During the difficult phase, you need to have patience.

But how is this related to excessive internet usage! Children & Teenagers are getting used to finding answers immediately. Be it listening to their favorite songs, downloading a video or playing a game, they do it when they want to. Even finding answers to difficult school questions is easy with the internet.

But by doing this, they develop a habit of finding an immediate solution to all the problems of life which is practically not feasible. As a result, their patience levels drop and they get angry at small things very quickly.

Cyber Bully

Impact of Internet

Social Media savvy teenagers and young adults have a habit of putting a lot more information on their social media profiles than they should ideally share.

Plus those children who are introverts or find it difficult to indulge in face to face interactions prefer the electronic medium to communicate with the outside world. Here on the electronic medium, because they are more comfortable, share a lot of stuff.

People can misuse their private stuff and even blackmail them. Thus children & teenagers become victims of cyberbullies. The sad part is that they find it difficult to share this with their parents as they will feel embarrassed. Thus they go through all this mental trauma alone. The Blue Whale game is a perfect example of how children find it difficult to share their problems with their problems. So much so that they end up committing suicide.

A Culture of Cheating

Impact of Internet

The internet has the answer to all your questions. Especially when it comes to a particular subject for example Trigonometry, Derivatives, Services Marketing etc you can find academicians solving each query and promoting their businesses on YouTube.

There are pages that students follow and do their homework by cheating. The purpose of these assignments was that students use their brain to solve and thus their mental growth is not as fast as it could have been. In fact what they learn is copying, cheating, and shortcuts.

Thus the habit of cheating and not using their brain to solve the queries simply ruins the purpose of doing the homework. Thus internet inculcates in them a culture of cheating.

Insomnia

Impact of Internet

Insomnia is a common sleep disorder. People who have insomnia find it difficult to fall asleep easily and stay asleep for a while. Playing games on mobile and computers for a long time and chatting till late affects sleeping.

When you scroll through your mobile at night while all lights of your room have been turned off, it adversely affects the eyes. These habits could result in you developing the sleeping disorder – Insomnia.

You might find me being too critical of the internet. We all are aware of how useful Internet is. But it is equally important not to be a slave to it.

Hope you liked the article. Leave a comment and let me know.

Keep coming back.
